Sonia records Beatles classic 'She loves you' (November 2007)
CD that proves we’re number 1 Oct 8 2007 by Catherine Jones, Liverpool Echo ELVIS Costello, Atomic Kitten and The Real Thing are
among Liverpool’s musical legends teaming up to create a unique new album for Capital of Culture. More than 20 acts from 40 years of Liverpool pop will appear on the Number 1 Project record due for release in January.
Each of the stars is recording their own version of a song made famous by a Liverpool artist.
The specially-recorded covers include Dr and the Medics’ version of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s Two Tribes, while former Eton Road singer Anthony Hannah will sing Frankie’s first number one, Relax.
Shack performs Day Tripper, The Farm will record Searchers’ classic Needles and Pins, and organisers are hoping Echo and the Bunnymen frontman Ian McCulloch will sing Imagine. Atomic Kitten will tackle Cilla Black’s Anyone Who Had a Heart, The Icicle Works will perform John Lennon’s Woman, and the Towers of London will take on Beatles classic Get Back.
Kittens’ manager Martin O’Shea, who with Korova Corp boss Jon Ritchie is behind the ambitious project, said today: “The support from everyone involved has been phenomenal.
“The artists’ choice of tracks will make this album truly unique and there will be a few surprise tracks with some very interesting duets from some very unlikely couples.
“We've already started recording and the album will be delivered to EMI on November 7.
“The artists are recording in Liverpool, London, and as far away as Los Angeles and Australia.
“We've some of the greatest producers from Liverpool on board including Ian Broudie, Steve Power, Mike Cave and Elvis Costello.”
Andy McCluskey of OMD said: “The Number 1 Project is a fantastic opportunity for Liverpool to celebrate it's own musical history in the very year it’s also Capital of Culture.
“How many cities in the world could boast so many massively successful artists covering number one singles by other acts from the very same city?” Atomic Kitten Natasha Hamilton said: “This is the perfect reason for the girls to have some fun together, we love the song and the idea of celebrating our city’s year as Capital of Culture while raising money for charity is too good to miss.
“We’re proud our third number one gave Liverpool its world leading status and we’re going to do our best to add to that in the future.”
The Rev Dr Clive Jackson from Dr & the Medics said: “I've always been very proud about being Liverpudlian, and now hopefully Liverpool can be proud of me.
“Being part of The Number 1 Project isn’t only a great honour for me and my family, but a chance to show everyone I'm from a great city and proud of it.”
Ray Quinn said: “To be asked to be part of the Number One Project is fantastic.
“I’m very proud to be from Liverpool and I’m a huge fan of all the music that has come out of the city over the past many years, before I was even born!”
Donny Tourette, singer with Towers of London, said: “I'm proud of my roots and can't wait to get involved.”
The record will be released on January 28 after the Number 1 Project concert at the ECHO Arena on January 19.
More than 5,000 tickets have already been sold for the gig which organisers promise will feature a stellar
line-up of Liverpool artists past and present performing their own versions of Liverpool’s Number Ones.
Two days later, on January 21, the Number 1 Project single will be put on general release which it is hoped will propel the city to the top chart spot at the start of Capital of Culture year.
The single will include three tracks led by Atomic Kitten’s cover of Cilla Black’s Anyone Who Had A Heart produced by Ian Broudie.
The second is potentially a Scaffold re-working of 3 Lions with new Liverpool 08 lyrics courtesy of the legendary and newly reformed trio of Mike McCartney, Roger McGough and John Gorman. The third track is yet to be announced.
